Azeemi & Bow Shoeshoe :: Fashion Launch

Edward was born and raised in Third Ward. In 2011 he graduated with a Bachelor's in Politics from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York. A year later he earned a Master's degree in Conflict Resolution and Governance at the University of Amsterdam. In 2014 he joined the Peace Corps and served as a Healthy Youth Adviser in the Kingdom of Lesotho, a tiny nation landlocked within South Africa.

He served in the Qacha's Nek district, one of Lesotho's most remote. The village he moved to had a population of less than 50, nestled within the Drakensberg Mountains at more than 8000 feet of elevation. There's no electricity, running water or paved roads. His home is tranquil yet isolated and completely undeveloped. He was assigned to work with three local groups that could never decide how to utilize him. So after a year of stagnation he created a venture with two young local partners.

Bow Shoeshoe makes bow ties from a traditional fabric called Seshoeshoe. It started as a means of generating a bit of income in this village where no industry other than herding exists. For a year's worth of herding, a person earns one cow. Through Bow Shoeshoe, 70 Basotho people from this region have learned to sew, developing transferable entrepreneurial skills, creating opportunity and putting a real money into the hands of the people. It's also meant to share the identity of Lesotho and the Basotho people with the outside world. These bow ties can bridge the gap between this poorly understood kingdom and the outside world.
