Sacred Web: The Artistic Lineage of John T. Biggers
On view: Saturday, June 13th, 2026 – Sunday, August 9th, 2026

Recognized for its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and deep narratives, Dr. John T. Biggers' work reflects the nuances of African American life and history. Drawing inspiration from West African traditions, spirituality, and the rich collage of Southern culture, his art continues to resonate with audiences today. His influence is deeply woven into Texas Southern University (TSU), where he served as a professor and founding chair of the art department, shaping generations of artists through his dedication to education, cultural expression, and artistic excellence.
Through his mentorship, Dr. Biggers encouraged aspiring artists to explore their identities, cultures, and histories while developing their own creative voices. In his seminal 1957 mural, Web of Life, Biggers described its subject as “the interdependence of living organisms in the balance of nature, and the relationship of all organisms to one another through the long line of evolutionary descent.”
Featuring more than thirty artists across multiple generations, the exhibition explores the enduring influence of Biggers' through painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, mixed media, and archival materials. Inspired by Biggers' discussion of Ananse in Ananse: The Web of Life in Africa, Sacred Web examines artistic lineage as a living web of relationships, mentorship, shared knowledge, and creative exchange. This idea of interconnectedness appears throughout his life and work and serves as the foundation for this exhibition and dedication.
As we celebrate Biggers' artistic genius and humanity, this exhibition honors a living philosophy carried forward through generations of artists at TSU and beyond, reminding us of the power of creativity to connect communities, bridge generations, and deepen our understanding of the shared human experience.
